  2. Sir please clear my 2 doubts 1) why have you applied conservation of momentum as it can be applied only in absence of external force . Here spring force is an external force for the pan 2) after we get the velocity of the pan can we use energy conservation and write (1/2)(3m)v^2= (1/2)kx^2-(3m)gx, where x is further compression of spring after mass m hits the pan

    Ans 1 ->
    (1) At the time of collision the pan is in balanced state so net force on it is zero and collision is considered as almost instantaneous process so we can use conservation of momentum...Also when impulsive forces are present we can neglect gravity and other finite forces of system in such cases....(2) Yes we can conserve energy after collision...as work energy theorem is another way to use energy conservation only...
